Mayoral candidate Catherine McKenney has promised to work to turn the National Capital Greenbelt into a national urban park if elected.
“The Ottawa greenbelt is the largest publicly owned greenbelt in the world and yet the greenbelt here is often under the threat of development,” McKenney said Tuesday at a media conference held at the entrance to the Pinhey Forest walking trail near the Nepean Sportsplex.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Ottawa SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
Critics say it’s only made the problem of sprawl worse since development jumped over the greenbelt and has continued unabated in Barrhaven, Orléans and Kanata. The greenbelt has lengthened commutes downtown and increased the cost of bringing city services such as sewer and water lines to far-flung developments. But McKenney dismissed those concerns.
In 2021, the federal government announced a $130 million fund to establish national urban parks as part of its commitment to conserving 25 per cent of land and inland waters and 25 per cent of marine and coastal areas by 2025, increasing to 30 per cent by 2030. McKenney plans another announcement Thursday for their climate action plan, followed by a “climate rally” on Friday.Article content
