PSAC workers at IDRC vote in favour of first strike mandate

With the union in a legal strike position, Silas said PSAC would be back at the bargaining table with IRDC alongside a mediator on Wednesday and Thursday, before taking any further steps. Only the PSAC national president has the authority to declare a strike, Silas said.“As always, the goal is never to go on strike, the goal is to reach a fair contract, and we feel that that’s within reach,” Silas said.

The bargaining unit declared impasse in March after IDRC refused to budge on its wage offer of 7.25 per cent over four years and failed to address other issues, including proposals to strengthen job security and career progression clauses in the collective agreement, and continued to table concessions.

Silas said the two sticking points included protections for term-position workers and general economic increases matching the precedent that was set at Treasury Board. Currently, he said, IDRC’s wage offer is below the 12.6 per cent compounded wage increases that PSAC and Treasury Board agreed to for other workers earlier this spring.Article content

“The team and the members have been clear that we can’t accept anything less than the precedent that’s been set in the federal government,” Silas said. “Even though this is not directly in federal government, IRDC is a Crown Corporation. We feel that that pattern should be respected. “We’re hoping that, with help of the mediator, we’ll be able to resolve those two outstanding issues because we feel that the deal is achievable.”
