Israeli military Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi has issued a stark warning to Hezbollah after violence erupted on the Lebanon-Israel border on Tuesday.
Mr Halevi said if the Lebanese militant group retaliates after five of its members were killed during operations against Israel, it will be"annihilated".The Iranian-backed group released footage on Tuesday showing it snipers destroying surveillance cameras at several Israeli military posts along the border, in a move which appears designed to mask the movements of its troops following days of skirmishes.
Israel's Defence Forces have also been shelling parts of Lebanon, targeting the militants, and on Monday the Israeli government ordered an evacuation of all residents living within two kilometres of the country's northern border. Tensions on the border between Israel and Lebanon have been steadily increasing in the aftermath of Hamas' brutal assault on October 7.
Iran, which heavily backs both Hezbollah and Hamas, provided significant support to the militants before and during the conflict, leading some analysts to label the clash a proxy war between Tehran and Israel. However, Hassan Fadlallah, who also serves as a legislator, hinted that Hezbollah's plans were"tied to what is going on in Gaza," hinting the militants may be waiting to see how and when Israel launches its widely anticipated ground offensive before acting.
Despite this, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a stern warning to Hezbollah on Tuesday, saying they would pay a"far heavier" price for interfering than in times past.
