On the mainland, strangers would ask where Ms Chen was from as soon as she opened her mouth and started speaking Mandarin. To avoid rude comments and a feeling of being looked down upon, Ms Chen said she would lie that she was from Fujian province, where Mandarin is spoken in tones close to those of her island home. On one such visit in the early 2000s, she was at Shanghai’s airport preparing to fly home when she accidentally took out her Taiwanese passport while looking for her “Taiwan Compatriot Permit” – used by Taiwanese to pass through immigration on the mainlan
