Gelato Messina and Boost Juice were “pumping for hours on end”, as Sydneysiders flocked to the beach to cool down in plus-30 degree temperatures.

The main strip of Bondi Beach was “pumping for hours on end” during the weekend, said Nishad Alani, CEO of Retail Zoo, which owns the Boost Juice chain.

“Normally, you wouldn’t expect this kind of foot traffic until the start of summer, so it’s a pleasing outcome for retailers,” he said. “At Boost we look on track to do our best September weekend ever.”On Sunday, Sydney beachside suburbs Bondi, Manly and Coogee reached highs of almost 33 degrees at around 3pm, while further north, parts of the Hunter Valley, including the wedding hotspot of Tocal, reached 34 degree just after 1pm.

A record 17,000 runners tackled the Sydney marathon’s gruelling 42-kilometre course on Sunday morning, while in the afternoon, thousands of supporters of the Indigenous Voice to parliament ignored the heat to march through the outskirts of Sydney’s CBD.The summer-like conditions extended up to central parts of NSW, with Walgett reaching 34.8 degrees just before 2pm.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned on Sunday that maximum temperatures over the coming days would continue to reach the low to mid-30s, and issued a heatwave alert covering the NSW coastline from south of Sydney to the Victorian border. The bureau had earlier warned that indicators of an El Nino weather event had strengthened and it would likely develop between September and November, bringing hotter, drier conditions to Australia.

Gelato Messina owner Declan Lee said he expected the coming summer to “be huge” for the ice cream chain.leads our coverage of the professional services sector. He is based in our Sydney newsroom.
