BREAKING: A veteran host of the popular Channel 7 breakfast show has shocked viewers on Monday morning by announcing he will step down from the lucrative position.

The veteran host revealed just after 8am on Monday morning he had decided to"hang up the boots" to focus on his family and as chairman of the Port Adelaide AFL club.

"I have loved every single minute of it and I'm incredibly proud of what we've achieved here over the last 21 years. I started here before Facebook, before Instagram, before Twitter and iPhones. That's how old I am," Koch said. "I've been privileged to experience so many great adventures, to meet so many different people and to meet so many different people and to cover so many moments of history in the making. It really is the world's best job.

"I'm going to miss working with the entire Sunrise team but particularly Nat , Beretts and Dave Walters, who been with me for virtually the entire time." Sunrise's David Koch announced on Monday morning he will be stepping down as host of the popular Channel 7 program after 21 years at the helm. Picture: Sunrise/Channel7
