'‘I’m proud to be Mi’kmaw’: Hundreds honour Nova Scotia residential school victims and survivors TruthAndReconciliatio
On this hill that rolls down onto Highway 215 Becky Julian, 81, remembers making caves out of snow in the 1940s with her classmates at Shubenacadie Indian Residential School. That same hill was covered with thousands of orange flags in the shape of a heart on Friday – Truth and Reconciliation Day. Beside it, drummers and dancers showcased their culture, something that was ripped away from children who attended this school from 1929 to 1967.
“It’s to bring healing, acknowledgment of all of the children and to allow our survivors a new vision from where the school sat,” she said. After placing her flag for several of her relatives who were forced to attend this residential school, Geneva Maloney hugged her friend Virginia Michael close.“I have memories of this place."“I’m glad that we get to talk about it and we get to express how we feel. And I’m glad I get to sit there with my regalia on today because our people weren’t allowed that.
