One of Ireland's Rugby World Cup debutants in Bordeaux last Saturday, the squad's youngest member may be destined to play an important role in the squad's challenge
Joe McCarthy hit another milestone on Saturday in a career that promises to age like a Bordeaux wine - and he promises there's way more to come.
Romania were game but limited opponents at the Matmut Atlantique stadium and, after a stuttering start, the men in green found their groove. Crossing the white line had been on his mind after some close calls in previous games - and on three occasions in Bordeaux before he galloped over. "It's class playing in front of my family, they're fantastic. They’ve played a massive part in getting me to where I am and they come to any game, no matter where is, down the country some place or across the world, they’re always there. They're a huge support to me.
He wasn't the only one to feel the nerves - several other players confided afterwards that the occasion felt different to what they had experienced before.

TRY FOR IRELAND! Ireland 7-5 Romania (Gibson-Park, 5′) If you’re going to go behind to a shock early try, there’s only one way to respond – and Ireland strike back immediately. Jason Tomane — brother of former Leinster man Joe — misses a tackle, Garry Ringrose dances through, and Jamison Gibson-Park is right there on his shoulder to take the pass and run in the try unopposed. Sexton converts. Ireland lead. And breathe.TRY FOR IRELAND! TRY FOR IRELAND! Ireland 68-8 Romania (O’Mahony, 70′) A perfect 10 for Ireland — and Peter O’Mahony, who has only scored one Ireland try since the 2019 World Cup, now has two in the same afternoon. Crowley is in deputising at scrum-half, Henderson tips it on, and O’Mahony is waiting for it on the wing and dots down. It leaves a nice little tester for Crowley on the sideline and he judges it perfectly.TRY FOR IRELAND!
