Indeed, the salty air and the sway of palm trees doesn’t always bring a smile to the faces of these new Flames. Not when we’re talking about Tampa, where Nikita Kucherov, Steven Stamkos and Andrei Vasilevskiy trail only Tom Brady on the list of local sporting heroes. Last spring, after the Panthers had claimed the Presidents’ Trophy as the NHL’s top regular-season troupe, a rematch in the division final ended in a sweep. Tampa’s bid for a three-peat fell just a wee bit short.
In fact, when Brad Treliving travelled to Montreal for that meet-and-greet dinner with Huberdeau, a sort of appetizer for extension talks, some of the food for thought was reflecting on those spring run-ins with the Lightning. The setup-machine left-winger specifically mentioned Stamkos and his commitment to keeping the puck out of his own net.
This latest Stanley Cup quest is just beginning. It’ll be months before Huberdeau, likely feeling a little lighter after sniping his second of the season in Monday’s home victory over the Los Angeles Kings, and Weegar can truly erase the sting of past playoff disappointments.
