NT charities say demand for help is soaring but they are being forced to turn away people, as most homeless shelters reach capacity — and many don't accept children.
But there's scarce affordable housing across the Territory, and homeless shelters are full to bursting.
"To see a family coming here with nowhere to sleep, no food and without any financial support, really breaks my heart," he said.Salvation Army Alice Springs site coordinator Emmanuel Migi.Ms Barnard believed this was a major factor in people's money struggles. "That way there's an option for families who are visiting from communities to have a safe place to stay," Ms Barnard said.
There's been an increase in the number of people seeking help from Salvation Army centres across the NT this holiday period.
