Quebec’s nationalist media have been aflutter since the naming last week of Amira Elghawaby as Canada’s first special representative on combating Islamophobia. Today, she apologized. Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet will speak tomorrow.
Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet meets with Amira Elghawaby in his office on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023.
Quebec’s nationalist media and most politicians in the province have been aflutter since the naming last week of Amira Elghawaby as Canada’s first special representative on combating Islamophobia. “QUÉBEC VEUT SA DÉMISSION,” read the all-caps headline in Québecor’s Le Journal de Montréal, the largest-circulation newspaper in the province, a sentiment amplified by its columnists, who often cast themselves as defenders of Quebec from federalist threats.
A motion calling on Elghawaby to resign was approved by all parties in the Québec national assembly Tuesday, with the exception of the 11 Québec solidaire MNAs who abstained. QS parliamentary leader Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois explained that the party would like to speak with Elghawaby first to clarify her views.
