The Russian President has made a surprise announcement about the almost one-year war, however, the move has been rejected by Ukraine and other world leaders who say it is hypocritical.

He ordered his Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to advise frontline troops there will be a 36-hour ceasefire period from noon Friday to midnight Saturday .

Russia previously appealed for ceasefires in areas of Ukraine but his announcement on Thursday is a first nation-wide since the invasion almost one year ago. "It is difficult for us to judge whether Podolyak's opinion reflects the view of the president of Ukraine," he said, according to Interfax. Other world leaders have also briefly spoken about the ceasefire, with United States President Joe Biden saying the Russian leader was using it as an opportunity to breathe.

"A so-called ceasefire brings neither freedom nor security to people living in daily fear under Russian occupation," she tweeted.
