At least 600 scouts from across the globe fall ill in South Korea, where a heatwave is gripping the nation.
More than 43,000 scouts are attending the jamboreeAt least 600 teenagers from across the globe were treated for heat-related illnesses at the World Scout Jamboree, and dozens of military doctors and nurses were sent to assist, authorities said.Some parts of South Korea exceeded 38 degrees Celsius this week.
Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo ordered 30 military physicians and 60 nurses to go to the camp to handle emergencies, his office said."Most of [the scouts] were experiencing mild symptoms, such as headache, dizziness and nausea and all returned to their campsites," a North Jeolla province fire official said.They are camping on an area of land where temperatures are expected to reach 35C on Friday.Scouts arrive at the South Korean event.
US mother Kristin Sayers said her son had to sleep on the ground at the camp because the tents were not ready. "The Scout motto is 'Be Prepared'. How could the organisers be so unprepared? I'm disappointed my son's dream is looking more like a nightmare," she told Reuters.British celebrity adventurer and Chief Scout Bear Grylls, urged attendees to stay hydrated.South Korea's weather agency expects the heatwave to last until next week.
