The New South Wales State Emergency Service responded to hundreds of calls for help overnight after Sydney was hit by a wild storm, which brought with it heavy rainfall, lightning and even a water spout.

NSW SES received 377 calls for help in the 24 hours to 5am on Wednesday, with 277 of those call-outs in the Sydney metro area.

There were 12 rescues mainly involving cars driving into floodwater, 11 of which were in metropolitan Sydney, NSW SES said in a statement. Focus areas for NSW SES included Warringah Pittwater, Orange, Queanbeyan, Ku-ring-gai and Sutherland.A huge water spout formed off the coast at Dee Why and footage captured on the Eastern Distributor showed some lanes covered in water.
