Huge lithium mine gets key greenlight in Portugal, in boost for Europe
LISBON - Portugal’s environmental protection agency gave a green light on Wednesday for a massive lithium mine that could become western Europe’s biggest and give a boost to the continent’s growing electric car industry.
The original proposal was “considerably modified” for the protection of waterways and biodiversity, the agency said in a statement. Environmentalists and local residents opposed to the project in the rural area criticised the agency’s decision.
