Analysts Optimistic on Energy and Utilities Sector as RE EPCC Projects Set to Deliver Strong Order Books and Revenue in 2025Analysts Optimistic on Energy and Utilities Sector as RE EPCC Projects Set to Deliver Strong Order Books and Revenue in 2025Analysts are optimistic about the energy and utilities sector as engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) contracts related to renewable energy (RE) are expected to generate the highest order books and revenue in 2025. This growth will be driven by the implementation of the 800 megawatt (MW) Corporate Green Power Program (CGPP) and the 2,000 MW Large Scale Solar (LSS5) projects, both expected to be completed by the financial year 2025 and 2026 and 2027 respectively. TA Research notes that LSS5 bid tariffs will reflect a decline in global solar module prices, which have fallen by over 60% since peaking in late 2021. Solar modules are estimated to contribute up to 50% of EPCC costs during LSS4 construction. As a result, TA Research estimates that overall EPCC costs will decrease by around 30% from LSS4, translating to lower bid tariffs of 14 to 16 cents per kilowatt-hour for LSS5 compared to the average bid tariff of 20 cents per kilowatt-hour in LSS4. The evaluation process for LSS5 bids has concluded, and shortlisted bidders will be informed directly by the Energy Commission starting December 23, 2024. TA Research also mentions that the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (Menen) has announced various incentives related to solar programs for self-consumption (SelCo). These incentives follow an upgrade in the Net Energy Metering (NEM) program. SelCo is designed for self-consumption only, while NEM allows excess solar generation to be exported to the grid as credits to offset grid electricity costs. Both programs are aimed at rooftop solar installations, but SelCo has a very limited quota.

Solar Energy Seen as Key Solution to Rising Electricity Costs in MalaysiaSolar Energy Seen as Key Solution to Rising Electricity Costs in MalaysiaMalaysian government urged to promote renewable energy, especially solar, to mitigate impact of potential electricity tariff hikes. While the government guarantees electricity tariffs for all sectors until June, global fuel cost increases make maintaining these prices for an extended period challenging. Experts highlight the potential of solar energy, citing reductions of up to 90% in monthly electricity bills for domestic users participating in the Net Energy Metering (NEM) Rakyat program. The NEM Nova program offers similar savings for commercial users. Concerns are raised about the limited quota-based NEM program, which restricts access to solar energy for those wanting to switch. The long-term financial burden of subsidies is also discussed as a potential issue.
