The areas with the highest population density are not those with the lowest amount of public open space for their residents
Residents of the inner west are short-changed on green space even compared to other central areas of Sydney, government figures show.
Although the City of Sydney, Waverley Council in the eastern suburbs and North Sydney Council each have a higher population density than the Inner West, these council areas still maintain a higher ratio of public open space.Waverley has the next lowest amount of public open space, at 624 people per hectare of public open space. Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte beaches provide compensation, while Centennial Park falls just outside its boundaries on its western side.
Randwick, which contains Centennial Park, several golf courses on crown land as well as beaches such as Coogee and Maroubra, is well served with only 190 residents per hectare of public open space. Not surprisingly, the areas that have the most open space per head of population are on the city fringe.
