Wallabies co-captain Michael Hooper has had his fair share of ice baths and saunas. Now he’s buying into them. rugby wellness recovery health
Hooper will still lead Australia in the Rugby World CupWallabies captain Michael Hooper isn’t retiring – yet.
“The idea of being right back at the start, it’s uncomfortable, but you also get your best growth in those years.”Hooper would’ve loved to have completed a university degree – it’s something his mum wanted, after all. But that’s not the reality for the 31-year-old, who went straight from his school in Sydney’s north, St Pius X College, to the Canberra Brumbies.
Hooper’s plans for the post-rugby world began in 2020, when the Wallabies were in lockdown at the Crown Plaza in Coogee and used Recoverie’s local centre to rehabilitate.“To use a bow and arrow analogy, you have to pull back the arrow to make [it] go forward,” Hooper says. “That’s what this type of stuff is. It’s pulling back so you can launch – whether that’s people for sport or mental health.
“When he’s ready, there’s a certain time period for him to come on board in a capacity he is interested in. We are going through a small growth phase, we will go through another one in a couple of years when his profile and his reputation … will help us progress even further,” Hoiles says. Members include elite athletes such as Sydney Swans star Lance Franklin and runner Nedd Brockmann, but the aim is attracting everyday people. Bardetta says the centres get groups of local builders or tradies on a Friday afternoon or businesses executives on a Monday morning.
“It’s been a rollercoaster. When I started … everything was just amazing. [But] if the sport is not going well, the players feel it. If there’s bad press, it hurts. Learning how to deal with that and social media is a unique thing that our generation is having to deal with as sportspeople.”
