As the last of the migratory birds make their way over Toronto, one of the best places to see them off is the Leslie Street Spit. As far back as 1984, “the Spit” has been a go-to location for both birds and birders. StarTogether
As the last of the migratory birds make their way over Toronto, one of the best places to see them off is the Leslie Street Spit.
“The Spit is maintained as a public urban wilderness,” Carley says, “for what we call passive recreational uses: walking, jogging, nature study, birdwatching, just going out and enjoying it.Carley, who has co-chaired Friends of the Spit for more than 35 years, has been witness to the extraordinary environmental growth and maturation over that time. “One of my first visits out there, there were almost no trees,” he says. “Now there are hundreds of plant species.
Carley sees the Leslie Street Spit as a metaphor for life’s ebbs and flows. “We always think that things are static, but they are not. They are ever-changing,” he says. “When I started out, there were no cormorants on the Spit. The big worry then was gulls — there were 75,000 pairs of ring-billed gulls.”
Carley lives in the west end but visits the east-side Spit regularly throughout the year. “I love being out there in winter,” he says, “with the ice formations and the waves. Of course, you’ve got to dress right for it.”
