A manufacturer who supplies weather balloons to the U.S. government talked about how weather balloons differ from the Chinese balloon shot down at the beginning of February off the coast of South Carolina.

So, how different is a weather balloon from the Chinese one that was shot down?First of all, the balloon that was shot down was massive. It was 10 times bigger than a weather balloon. And the payload on that balloon was a couple of thousand pounds. So the only type of balloons that are launched with that type of payload are long-term scientific study balloons that are launched out of the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility. And those payloads are definitely designed for long-term studies.

Typically, if it was a large balloon launched for scientific purposes, would people know about it?The scientific balloons that are launched out of the scientific balloon facility, you could say that yes, when one of those balloons are launched, it’s more of a collaboration. The science community tends to collaborate. Whereas the surveillance community would not do such a thing.
