The total cost for the rebuild of the North Sydney Olympic Pool is already estimated to be $89 million. The council is now poised to spend even more on consultants to get it across the line.
North Sydney Council is poised to splash another $650,000 on consultants to execute the final stage of its troubled Olympic Pool rebuild, saying professional project managers will ultimately save time and ratepayers’ money in the project’s eleventh hour.
Because of the timeframe and APP Group’s prior involvement in the project, the council does not intend to put the contract out to competitive tender. This is legally permissible for contracts over $250,000 in extenuating circumstances. North Sydney councillor and former mayor Jilly Gibson was critical: “I think our residents are a bit sick of all this buck passing to consultants.”“The review noted that the current project team had significant knowledge and skill regarding the project for finalisation of the work,” the council’s summary said.
Councillors received an update on the project on Monday. MaryAnn Beregi, a critic of the previous administration’s efforts on the pool project, said the appointment of an external project manager was completely justified.“Most ratepayers would say it was an absolute farce to say that council could run it in-house,” Beregi said. “If that’s what it’s going to cost, that’s what it’s going to cost, but it will come back in spades.
