How legend’s shock switch could provide World Cup blueprint for ‘unstoppable’ Aussie weapon
During the 1993 tour of New Zealand, Mark Waugh had just been axed from Australia’s Test side when captain Allan Border approached him about new role in the one-day team.
Three years later, the elegant right-hander was once again tasked with opening the batting in Australia’s World Cup campaign in India, finishing the tournament as the team’s leading run-scorer with 484 at 80.66, including a match-winning 126 against the hosts in Mumbai. Much like Waugh, the West Australian started his international career in the middle order, but thrived when given an opportunity to prove his worth at the top of the order.
Warner and Marsh, both burly ball-strikers, could power Australia to rollicking starts throughout the tournament if they survive the Powerplay.
