Friday, September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and a number of local groups and governments are marking it with commemorative events.

The day was made a federal holiday in 2021, and is also known as Orange Shirt Day. The aim is to reflect on the abuse and indoctrination suffered by generations of Indigenous youth in the residential school system.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission ran until 2015 and outlined 94 calls to action. Shortly after, at 10 a.m., officials will unveil an orange crosswalk outside the entrance of Rotary Park.Some municipalities are handing out orange ribbons and encouraging you to tie them up at specific locations., comprised of a mosaic of orange fabrics. Those fabrics will be given out at City Hall and the Central Library.
