Fashion makes a sizeable contribution to climate change. The retailer is launching a $1.5m climate fund aimed at projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Country Road will invest $1.5 million in grant funding into projects driving climate solutions in the Australian fashion industry over the next three years in what it claims is a first for a local retailer.
These could include projects that improve energy efficiency in the production of textiles or projects that provide consumers with accurate data on the emissions intensity of fashion items, or encourage more sustainable fashion choices by consumers. That means the fashion industry emits about the same quantity of GHGs per year as the entire economies of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom combined, according to McKinsey’s 2020 Fashion on Climate report.
In February, Country Road launched its “Toward Circulatory” range made with 30 per cent of its own offcuts.Sustainability expert Helen Crowley, managing director at Pollination and adviser on the fund, said consumers were calling on businesses to boost efforts towards the circular economy and make it easier for them to reduce waste.
