Toronto’s Catholic school board, and others in the province, are changing their rules and allowing teens of all religions to run for student trustee — a move that comes in advance of upcoming elections.
“We were extremely disappointed in the decision, however we understand that we are required to follow the law,” said Patrick Daly, president of the, which represents English Catholic boards in the province.
“We are confident that this decision by the board of trustees will provide more opportunities for all our talented students to be involved and play a greater role in leadership as student trustees at TCDSB.” Stephanie De Castro, a student trustee at the TCDSB, calls the policy change “a good step” towards inclusivity, noting it “opens another door for student representation and opportunity at our board.”
