Deliveries of baked goods, firewood, pet lambs and even a Lachie Neale visit helped these border residents form lasting bonds with the officers at COVID border checkpoints.

abc.net.au/news/border-checkpoint-covid-police-army-farmers-community-friendship/102058588While it marked a sense of reclaimed freedom, Michelle Malone felt a pang of sadness when the COVID border checkpoint disappeared from the end of her street in mid-2021.

Two years later, the Malones, and many other border families, have kept in touch with some of the officers."It was a big shock," Ms Malone said about the arrival of the checkpoint. The fear was noticed and one of the army officers gave her sons a ration pack in an effort to ease their uncertainty.Easier for some, harder for others

She delivered baked food every five days when the shift changed and a new group stationed themselves at the checkpoint."It's always nice to show a bit of country hospitality to people and show that there's good in the world."Like Ms Malone, she appreciated the unique opportunity it gave her children.

"They were really interested in what we were all doing. They were here for a whole year of all of our seasons," Ms Malone said."I had a few visits from a few of the policemen just to check that out, and I took one lamb down to show them as well," Ms Malone said."I think one or two of them purchased houses here and plan to come back," she said.

Scott Morrison says COVID lab leak accident ‘not unfeasible’Scott Morrison says COVID lab leak accident ‘not unfeasible’Former prime minister Scott Morrison says it is not unfeasible that COVID-19 may have started through an accident in a lab. “The trail runs cold and that’s why I said it at the time – I was mocked for saying it, I said there should be the ability for the WHO to send in people to go and investigate in circumstances like this but that was resisted,' Mr Morrison told Sky News host Sharri Markson in an exclusive interview. “Whether it started in the lab by accident – I never saw anything that would’ve suggested it happened on purpose, I never believed that. “It’s not unfeasible that it would’ve occurred through an accident and even the accident wouldn’t have been the great mistake – not telling anyone was the bit (that) concerned me.”
