n September 2021, Scott Langille went to Stellarton town council with a petition aimed at saving the handicapped lift in the apartment building he lived in at the time. | SaltWire
More than a year since his fight to save the lift, Langille maintains he was the victim of a revenge eviction.
At the time he was evicted, Langille was dealing with some health issues and was faced with the choice of appealing for the right to stay or taking the time to get a new apartment and get out, he chose the latter. Several years ago, when he tried to draw attention to one of his concerns by going to the tenancy board the person hearing his case sided with the landlord and he alleges he too was given an eviction notice. While that landlord later backed off on the eviction attempt, the man has been left in a situation where he fears retaliation should he persist in his complaints. He has found little satisfaction when he tries to pursue the issue through other avenues.
“You see it all the time,” Wood said. “There's no way with the current system to substantially hide your identity in any way that actually protects you and because landlords aren't licensed they can't be unlicensed.” On a broad scale in Nova Scotia, the only type of inspections that happen automatically after construction are fire code inspections.
Another common issue is fixed-term leases. In these cases when a fixed-term agreement ends a landlord can choose not to renew the lease and the tenant is left with little legal recourse.
