Housing Minister Julie Collins says the money from the Housing Australia Future Fund will be “life-changing” for many Australians. A deal on the housing bill following months of a stalemate had finally been struck, with the Greens securing an additional $1 billion on top of the pre-existing $2 billion to be spent on public and community housing this year. “It will create … an ongoing pipeline of funding to help build social and affordable homes right across the country,” Ms Collins said during Question Time on Wednesday. “Not just for this government, not just in five years, but they’re in perpetuity. “So that we can have a steady flow and pipeline of social and affordable homes into the future.”

The Senate will sit late into the night on Tuesday to get all the formalities completed before the bill is expected to pass on Wednesday. The threat of a double-dissolution election trigger looming over politics for some time was not apparently the primary reason for this being pushed through quickly from the Greens’ perspective. They say that the government wanted to get a deal done on this front. Now the party has vowed to continue fighting for as long as takes to focus on renters’ rights.

The Albanese government’s housing agenda is ‘broad and ambitious’The Albanese government’s housing agenda is ‘broad and ambitious’Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the Albanese government’s housing agenda is “broad and ambitious”. Mr Chalmers’ remarks come after Labor struck a deal with the Greens on the Housing Australia Future Fund to pass the bill through the Senate. The minor party has held out on providing their support to the government’s housing policy until their demands of stronger rental restrictions and an increase in annual housing spending were met, which led to a months-long stalemate within parliament. “So, the first part is to build more housing and get more supply so that we can address this longstanding challenge in our economy,” Mr Chalmers said during Question Time on Tuesday. “Our job, and we embrace this enthusiastically, is to work for Australia to continue to build new homes in our economy, in our communities, and we’ll keep doing that despite the negative and nasty and angry politics played by those opposite.”
