Proposed rules would curtail power of Office of Congressional Ethics just as several Republican members face likely inquiries
, since OCE has the power to retrospectively examine potential campaign malfeasance and violations of federal election law, refer cases to the House ethics committee, and release a report even if House ethics closes the case.
The incoming House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries would immediately have the ability to name replacements to the Democratic-side of the board, but such appointments typically take months and finding suitable candidates remains an arduous process, the people said. The reason for the changes was not clear and a spokesman for McCarthy did not respond to a request for comment. A spokesman for the incoming House judiciary committee chairman Jim Jordan, who defied a January 6 committee subpoena, said he wasn’t involved in drafting the changes.
The most prominent case brought by OCE also focused on a Democrat, the former chairwoman of the House financial service committee Maxine Waters, who wasto help a struggling bank in which her husband owned stock, though she was ultimately cleared.
