Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros has formally sought a Senate inquiry into the recent spate of killings in Negros Oriental.
Hontiveros recently filed Senate Resolution No. 47, urging the Senate committees on public order and dangerous drugs, and justice and human rights, to conduct a joint probe into the killings and “the circumstances that allowed for the lawless violence that cloaked the province.”
“The killing spree that affected the Negros region and Negros Oriental in particular is a microcosm of the culture of lawless violence in the country, one that has worsened in recent years,” Hontiveros said in the resolution. Hontiveros said it was imperative that the Senate is able to create policies that would address the root cause of the conflict in Negros Oriental.
“The gunmen carried out the executions either in broad daylight, within spitting distance of police precincts, or in the homes of the victims,” she said.
