Hong Kong plans to take the US to the World Trade Organization (WTO) over increased tariffs on its goods, mirroring a similar move by mainland China.

Hong Kong will file a complaint with the World Trade Organization ( WTO ) in response to heightened US tariffs on its goods, a government spokesperson said Friday. This move comes days after Beijing announced a similar complaint. US President Donald Trump initiated an escalating trade war with China over the weekend by imposing a 10 percent tariff hike on goods originating from both mainland China and Hong Kong .

A spokesperson for Hong Kong's government stated, 'The Hong Kong government will formally launch procedures in accordance with the WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism against the US' unreasonable measures to defend our legitimate rights.' The spokesperson emphasized that the US tariffs are 'grossly inconsistent with the relevant WTO rules and ignore our status as a separate customs territory,' adding that the government 'strongly opposes' these measures.Mainland China also filed a complaint with the WTO to safeguard its 'legitimate rights and interests,' according to its commerce ministry. Since reverting to Chinese rule in 1997, Hong Kong has operated as a special administrative region and is classified as a separate customs territory. It has been a WTO member for three decades. Hong Kong's secretary for commerce and economic development, Algernon Yau, stated Thursday that the tariffs 'are not expected to have a large impact.' Yau further explained that goods exported from Hong Kong to the United States in 2023 were valued at around HK$6.1 billion ($780 million) and constituted only 0.1 percent of the city's total exports.City officials have consistently maintained a delicate balance by asserting Hong Kong's status as a distinct entity in international trade while simultaneously emphasizing its political status as an 'inalienable part' of China. The United States revoked Hong Kong's special trading privileges in 2020 following Beijing's implementation of a sweeping national security law on the former British colony to suppress dissent. At the time, Trump issued an executive order stating that Hong Kong was 'no longer sufficiently autonomous to justify differential treatment in relation to (China).'
