Hong Kong offering US$127,600 reward for former pro-democracy lawmakers living in U.S., Britain, Canada and Australia
Hong Kong police on Monday accused eight self-exiled pro-democracy activists of violating the territory’s harsh National Security Law and offered rewards of 1 million Hong Kong dollars each for information leading to their arrests. The U.S. and Britain strongly condemned the move.
They are currently living in the U.S., Britain, Canada and Australia after some were earlier accused of various other offences. He cited articles of the security law which state that police have extraterritorial jurisdiction, and said they would pursue people overseas who endanger Hong Kong’s national security.
Former lawmaker Hui is accused of inciting secession, subversion and foreign collusion for allegedly calling for Hong Kong and Taiwan’s independence on social media, as well as for sanctions against city officials. Britain’s Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said the U.K. “will not tolerate any attempts by China to intimidate and silence individuals in the U.K. and overseas.”
