BCHL commissioner Steven Cocker believes that the non-sanctioned rules were devised specifically for start-up leagues and not one like the BCHL, which has a history that dates back to 1961. The BCHL pulled out of the Canadian Junior Hockey League, which was built to band together the country’s 10 Junior A loops for Hockey Canada and run events like the Centennial Cup national championship. The BCHL made public last September a 35-page white paper it had written entitled Modernizing Junior Hockey in Canada and sent beforehand to Hockey Canada and BC Hockey.

Landing referees and linesmen could prove difficult for the BCHL if Hockey Canada continues to hold firm about not having any crossover with non-sanctioned leagues.Leaving Hockey Canada also means that the BCHL is no longer covered on the insurance plan.
