The Calgary Hitmen and the Red Deer Rebel will battle in the first round of the WHL playoffs.
Fiddler-Schultz was just a 17-year-old back when the last time the Hitmen checked into the post-season, coming off a 53-game rookie campaign with the Hitmen. His playoff contribution in the club’s two-round effort — which ended in an Eastern Conference semifinal sweep at the hands of the rival Edmonton Oil Kings — was one goal in 11 games.
“It feels great to be back there,” said Fiddler-Schultz, who joins fellow forward Jacob Wright — with just six post-season games from last spring with the Everett Silvertips — and goaltender Brayden Peters — without a playoff game to his name — as the this year’s 20-year-old players for the Hitmen. “It feels great to be playing some really big games at this time of year.
“In this series, we are the underdogs, which we are just fine with, because we don’t carry the burden of pressure,” said Fiddler-Schultz, approaching the next week with positive spirit. “We’re just gonna try to focus on one shift and one game at a time so we don’t get too caught up in the hype of the whole series and just try to focus on playing the way we know how and the way we’ve done all year to get here.
The Rebels attack is paced by 19-year-old talent Kai Uchacz, who was one of only two WHL stars to score 50-plus during the regular schedule. Captain Jayden Grubbe had a team-high 49 assists, while defenceman Christoffer Sedoff collected 46 assists and 51 points.Article contentMeanwhile, Fiddler-Schultz finished tops in scoring among the Hitmen for a second consecutive season with a 75-point year.
