Nick Labadie says he’s no hero, but the driver of a truck that burst into flames after a head-on collision on Vancouver Island would probably disagree.
“I was on my way to work in Nanaimo and came around the corner and it appeared a head-on collision had just happened,” Labadie, senior field operations manager for north Vancouver Island at B.C. Hydro, said. “There were flames coming from below the pickup truck and the driver was stuck.” He and the other man were able to pull the driver through the smashed window and pull him along the ground to safety.
The SUV had been travelling east, the pickup truck heading west, Owens said, and the truck caught on fire upon impact. The driver, the chief said, had a pre-existing broken leg, making his rescue all the more amazing given he wasn’t able to put weight on the leg or extract his tangled foot from the pedals.
