A growing number of countries in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific have banned TikTok.
The company's CEO faced a grilling Thursday from US lawmakers. TikTok, which is owned by the Chinese technology company Bytedance, has long maintained that it does not share data with the Chinese government.
The company points to a project its carrying out to store US user data in the US, which it says will put it out China's reach. It also disputes accusations it collects more user data than other social media companies, and insists that it is run independently by its own management. But many governments remain cautious about the platform and its ties to China. Here are the places that have implemented partial or total bans on TikTok:in 2022 on the grounds of protecting young people from"being misled.”Belgium temporarily banned TikTok from devices owned or paid for by the federal government, citing worries about cybersecurity, privacy and misinformation.
The companies were given a chance to respond to questions on privacy and security requirements but the ban was made permanent in January 2021.Lawmakers in New Zealand and staff at the nation’s Parliament will be prohibited from having the TikTok app on their work phones, following advice from government cybersecurity experts.
