For newly-minted P-plater Kyron McArthur, a licence is a necessity for obtaining work and living independently. But how do you learn to drive when no-one you know has a licence?

Experts say the programs can help end the cycle of licence adversity among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

The senior research fellow at the Guunu-maana Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Program said there was limited information on Indigenous driver licence rates but they were considerably lower than the 70 per cent of licences held by non-Indigenous Australians."Particularly in regional areas, we know there's a lack of access to public transport and ... not having access to transport limits a lot of engagement in other activities such as employment," he said.

"As well as with football, I don't have to rely on other people to take me and I can have more opportunities, like I could go to Adelaide.Berri Regional Secondary College Aboriginal education leader David Binney said the project was the result of discussions with young Indigenous people about how to support positive pathways."The cost of driving lessons is really expensive, and some students have the barrier of their parents not being able to support them.
