Fire crews, assisted by locals, are battling blaze between Loughanure and Annagry
At least eight sections of Donegal fire service have been battling the blaze for the several hours.Local TD and Leas Cheann Comhairle Pat the Cope Gallagher called on the Minister for Defence to mobilise the Aer Corps and soldiers in a bid to halt the spread of the fires. He criticised how long it had taken the Minister to make a decision on the matter.
“Myself and Donegal County Council requested the Minister to send up the Aer Corps four hours ago and they have only mobilised them a short time ago and I am very disappointed that it took so long,” he said. “The community response has been amazing but we are still in the middle of trying to bring this under control,” he said.A local authority spokesperson said “Donegal County Council appeals to landowners and members of the public to exercise caution and to take all necessary measures to prevent the occurrence of wildfires involving material such as gorse, heather and similar.
The council has also urging landowners and members of the public not to engage in activities that could cause wildfires. “Householders or building owners in areas susceptible to wildfire are advised to remove or cut back any vegetation in the immediate vicinity of their house, building or oil tank to prevent wildfires damaging or destroying their property.
