UPDATE: There are still heavy traffic delays at Menai in Sydney's south this afternoon, after a police chase came to a fatal end almost 9 hours ago. The worst of the traffic is between Henry Lawson Drive at Padstow and Menai Road. 9News MORE:

are advised to avoid Alfords Point Road as it is closed in both directions after the crash in Menai just after 6am.Commuters are experiencing up to an hour and 40 minutes of traffic delays after a man died by crashing his ute in a high-speed police chase in Menai.Police allege the driver of the ute failed to stop for a routine check at on Alfords Point Road, resulting in a pursuit.The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other driver was unharmed.

"I did my run, went and had a coffee and went to come back but I couldn't come back," she told 9News."About eight or nine kilometres until I get home but that's okay.READ MORE:"Northbound traffic on New Illawarra Road is diverting via the Bangor Bypass to travel eastbound to Sutherland while motorists from Sutherland should use Princes Highway instead," the Transport Management Centre said in a statement.

"Motorists already in the area should exercise caution, allow plenty of extra travel time and follow directions of emergency services and traffic crews.
