'Heavy hearts': Boundary review set to nix Calgary minor hockey club yyc
“The CMHA Board of Directors can promise that we have done absolutely everything that we could to try and keep our Association intact and unfortunately, we were only one small voice in a decision that was clearly out of our control.”The association says its players will be divided between the Bow River and Simons Valley clubs — the latter of which largely comprises northeast Calgary neighbourhoods. The note does not state whether any other associations may be impacted.
However, a February Hockey Calgary bulletin notifying members of boundary review states that one association fell outside Hockey Calgary’s enrolment standards, and two others came “very close” to doing so. It also noted the city’s northwest corner had been left as a future project when the current boundaries were finalized in 2020. Since November, a subcommittee of seven association presidents has been working toward a boundary solution for north Calgary.
“The decision will be made by the full group of Association Presidents and finalized early this spring for implementation this fall. This is an emotional discussion with many differing opinions. The goal is to find a solution that is best for the ‘full hockey community’, and not just one association or another,” reads the letter, penned by Hockey Calgary executive director Kevin Kobelka.
“I can tell you that we have been working on the process for close to four months now, and there has been significant engagement with the presidents of all community hockey associations as per our policies,” he said in an emailed statement.Article content “When the full process is complete we will be releasing information to all of our members. As an addition, we have released bulletins to our membership throughout the season highlighting the fact that this process was taking place, so it should come as no surprise to the members.”In 2019, Hockey Calgary found itself in hot water over a similar boundary situation.
