This was the plea from independent badminton shuttlers to Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who has been busy having town hall meetings with different groups of athletes currently under the umbrella of the National Sports Council (NSC) and the National Sports Associations.
Independent shuttlers, however, have been left out although they form the bigger representation for Malaysia in the home tournament starting on Tuesday at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia players who are fully funded are Ng Tze Yong ; world champions and world No. 3 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun ; Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah , and Hoo Pang Ron-Teoh Mei Xing, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei . Like all other pros, Peng Soon-Liu Ying have to depend on the sponsors. Fortunately, they are the Olympic silver medal winners, but many others struggle to get complete support.
“I understand that as independent players, we have to source for our own funds and that’s okay ... but it will be nice if the ministry can support players like us, especially when we are injured while playing for Malaysia,” said Vivian.
