The products are not approved by Health Canada and have not been assessed for safety, efficacy, and quality. They could contain prescription or controlled drugs that could pose serious health risks, said the federal agency. While dihydrocodeine tablets are used in other countries as cough suppressants or for severe and chronic pain, it is not authorized for use in Canada, said Health Canada in aOne product marketed for digestion and to relieve heartburn contains ursodeoxycholic acid, a prescription drug used for some liver diseases. People who take this drug in Canada have to undergo blood tests to monitor the risk of liver toxicity.

Two products marketed as eczema and rash creams contain prednisolone valerate acetate, a prescription corticosteroid drug used in eye drops to treat eye inflammation. It has not been approved for use in creams or ointments in Canada.
