Kayaking, swimming or boating this summer? Keep this rules in mind when you spot wildlife out on the water.
Close encounters between British Columbians and whales, sea lions and other marine animals are well documented in viral videos and photos but it’s important to remember the mammals are protected by law, no matter how cute or amazing your photo op might be.Why do I have to keep my distance from marine animals?It’s important not to disturb or harm mammals and their habitat. Kayaking or boating too close or even making too much noise can disturb or cause stress to these mammals.
But I’m not touching the animal. Is that OK?Even if you’re not touching the animal, you may still be disturbing the animal. Fisheries and Oceans Canada defines disturbing marine wildlife as:• Feeding, swimming or interacting with a marine mammal.• Separating a marine mammal from its group or going between it and a calf.
Certain animals will require people stay back a greater distances, such as killer whales in B.C. and the Pacific Ocean which require a minimum of 200 metres.
