As the annual parade marking Sikh New Year returns to the CNE, a look at the man behind the rice, subji and 300 pounds of dal served as langar.

Hardev Singh Samra walks across the marble floors of the Gursikh Sabha Gurudwara, through the community kitchen to the storage rooms filled with bags of flour and dal and stacks of massiveHe’s taking stock of everything in preparation for one of the kitchen’s busiest days of the year. It’s when dozens of volunteers here, combined with many more at Ontario Khalsa Darbar Gurudwara in Mississauga, will feed thousands of people in Toronto to mark the Sikh New Year.

Referring to the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book of scripture, Samra explained that langar “teaches us any human can share whenever we have anything to share.” And for Samra, Khalsa Day is all about sharing with the city of Toronto. “We show how Sikhs share with others,” he said, “and we show other cultures our identity, and that everyone is equal.”

Samra was appointed the permanent manager of langar after the Ontario Sikh and Gurudwara Council and other volunteers were impressed with his efforts at the very first Nagar Kirtan Parade in 1999 at Jarvis Collegiate Institute.
