The private interment ceremony - also attended by Victorian premier Dan Andrews - was held on the 40th anniversary of the election of the Hawke government.

After marching across the Sydney Harbour Bridge to mark the end of WorldPride and speaking at NSW Labor’s election campaign launch earlier in the day, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made a surprise visit to Melbourne to speak at the interment of his some of his beloved predecessor’s ashes on Sunday afternoon

“The Hawke Government reforms set Australia up for decades of economic growth, promoted social equity and protected our natural environment,” he said. Sir Robert Menzies, Sir John Gorton and Malcolm Fraser are buried in the cemetery’s prime ministers’ garden while James Scullin is buried in the cemetery’s Catholic section. There is also a memorial for Harold Holt, whose remains were never found after he drowned at sea.
