Hawaii Governor Josh Green delivered a tragic update in the aftermath of the horrific fires in Maui, saying he expects the death toll to continue climbing as the state begins rebuilding after the 'largest natural disaster we've ever experienced.'

Hawaii Governor Josh Green has provided a grim warning as he updated media in the aftermath of horrific wildfires in the state, saying the death toll would"continue to rise" as authorities began their clean-up operation.

More than 22,000 buildings have been destroyed or damaged in Maui, the Governor said, 86 per cent of those were residential, with the inferno causing almost $9.2 billion in losses. Residents of tourist hotspot Lahaina were left frustrated after an initial order to allow residents to return was reversed mere hours later leaving thousands stuck and uncertain about when they could return home. "We have to go with caution, there are heavy metals, there are toxic sinks where the houses have come down, where businesses have come down."We've lost too much life already." He added that power had been restored to about 3,700 homes so far, but that there was still a lot of work to be done before the grid was fully repaired.
