Perth's performing arts and LGBTQIA+ communities have rallied around a drag performer after 'hateful' flyers were distributed before a popular story time event.
City of Bayswater acting chief executive Des Abel said the response to the storytelling events at Maylands Library had been "overwhelmingly positive".
"Drag Queen Story Hour encourages early literacy and a love of books while celebrating the differences that make us unique," Mr Abel said."The city promotes inclusion and values diversity in our community."Morrison said after a post on social media, a large cohort of Perth's LGBTQIA+ attended the event to show their support.
"I have had literally thousands of messages from people – a lot I do not know -- showing support of me, the community and drag story time," Morrison told Jo Trilling on ABC Radio Perth."So amidst the utter exhaustion and the desire to sob at any given time, to have that wonderful support from our community, it's really encouraging, especially given the state of what's happening to queer people around the world at the moment.
"Anti-drag story time misinformation perpetuates harmful stereotypes about LGBTQIA+ individuals and reinforces the notion that our community is somehow deviant or inappropriate," the statement said."Drag culture is a vibrant and important part of LGBTQIA+ history, and it is not inherently sexual as critics attempt to characterise them to be.
"Drag performers [who are lazily and incorrectly referred to as transvestites] often use their art form to express themselves, promote acceptance and challenge societal conventions.""Offstage, Cougar is a caring, thoughtful, intuitive human who comes from a wonderful, supportive and loving family and that resonates through their attitude to life," she said.
