Former Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting has lashed out at the umpires in the fifth Ashes Test over their selection of a replacement ball after the original was knocked out of shape.

The ball being used in the fourth innings was swapped after it had gone out of shape after 36 overs on day four, but the replacement ball appeared to be in far better condition than the original.

Changing balls is common in Test match cricket and the umpires are in charge of picking a new one which is supposed to be a like-for-like replacement. Ponting was furious with the condition of the new ball and immediately criticised umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Joel Wilson for their selection. “The biggest concern I have is the big discrepancy in the condition of the ball chosen to replace it. There is no way in the world you can even look at those two balls there and say in any way they are comparable,” he told Sky Sports.

I cannot fathom how bad a mistake this is from supposedly the best umpires in world cricket. Look at the disparity in balls! Insane.
