Meriton will open its first Melbourne hotel on September 26 after launching in Canberra in August. A second Melbourne hotel is “on the cards”.

in April 2019 that Meriton had secured the site for its first Melbourne hotel. Meriton paid about $29 million for the 781-square-metre site, which came with a permit for a 57-storey building with 263 apartments.

Mr Thomas, who is also a company director at Meriton, said the opening of the group’s first hotels in Melbourne and Canberra would boost brand identity in those markets.“Harry and the Meriton parent group is well established in NSW and south-east Queensland, where it is a household name. But in Canberra and Melbourne there is generally less awareness,” he said.

Being a domestic travel-orientated brand amid the slow return of international tourism, Mr Thomas said Meriton Suites had enjoyed a strong recovery, after escaping the worst of the pandemic compared to its traditional hotel competitors.“We were lucky that our Gold Coast and Brisbane hotels performed really well during COVID. In NSW, we were lucky to leverage our properties into the short-term rental accommodation market,” he said.

Meriton Suites is the only hotel business in Australia to be entirely owner-operated – all 23 hotels are owned by Mr Triguboff – whereas most other hotel companies manage or lease hotels owned by others.
