Lawyer for the News Group Newspapers Anthony Hudson said Prince Harry had deliberately deleted the messages between him and John Moehringer.

The Duke of Sussex has been ordered to explain to a High Court judge how private messages to the ghostwriter of his book Spare were “destroyed,” as they may have been relevant to his legal action against the publisher of The Sun .

The messages could be used as evidence in the 39-year-old duke's case where he alleges he was targeted by journalists and private investigators working for NGN, which also published the now-defunct News Of The World. According to Harry’s barrister, David Sherborne, the duke had not discussed unlawful information gathering via text or WhatsApp with anyone and that his Signal messages with the ghostwriter had been “wiped”.

In his oral ruling, the judge said he had “real concerns” this issue was being “inadequately” dealt with by Harry’s legal team, adding that the majority of searches for material had been carried out by the duke himself rather than lawyers. Mr Hudson accused Harry of “obfuscation” and creating an “obstacle course” in the face of NGN’s efforts to source more material.
